eWas project

An early warning system for cultural heritage

Objectives

eWAS aims to develop new technologies for the protection, conservation, and safety of historical-monumental buildings, museum assets, art objects, and archaeological areas, contributing to strategic planning for better prevention and management of Cultural Heritage through the combination of Systems for Environmental Safety and Structural Safety.

Development of a new urban environmental monitoring system through the prevalent use of Smart stations and microsensors, in a continuous and multi-parametric mode
Development of an innovative hybrid (static and dynamic) wireless monitoring system for the purpose of structural safety verification (SHM) and identification of crisis conditions that can generate preventive alarms (early warning)
Installation of a prototype of a low-cost Smart, deformational, and seismic-accelerometric monitoring network integrated with a satellite monitoring system, to enable the necessary mitigation and prevention actions (early warnings)
Design of an innovative protection system for artifacts in archaeological areas, consisting of a lightweight architectural enclosure controlled by a sensor network
Creation of a prototype of an "Early Warning" system for "early" alerting and for the mitigation of environmental risks, which would allow, in some cases, the information to also be used for the automatic service interruption of equipment and systems
Creation of an open digital platform for the active involvement of different classes of stakeholders (administrators, historians, planners, tourists, citizens) in cultural heritage conservation initiatives

Impact

The main impact concerns Cultural Heritage, allowing for a systemic planning of interventions in the cultural heritage sector, overcoming the current emergency-based planning (urgency and exceptionality of the intervention), which too often justifies extraordinary interventions after deterioration has already occurred, with negative economic consequences and sometimes unfortunately irreversible damage.

The integrated environmental and structural monitoring system responds to various needs that are partially unmet in current markets. Several needs are met by simpler systems that only partially satisfy the buyer's needs. In the long term, the market remains in a growth phase in terms of number of applications and volumes. In terms of turnover, SMEs expect to increase their business thanks to the sale of complex environmental and structural monitoring systems.

The market potential is enormous in relation to Italy's high seismic risk, one of the highest in Europe.

The project contributes significantly to the strategic repositioning of the socio-economic system of the Sicily Region through a raising of control standards on the environment and on structures and infrastructures.

On one hand, it seeks to provide the Public Administration with new tools for building control for citizen safety, while on the other, it directs the activity of Sicilian SMEs towards high-value-added market sectors.
